CBT Techniques for Challenging Negative Thoughts
Master Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to identify and reframe negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety and depression.
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
CBT is a proven therapeutic approach that helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By changing unhelpful thinking patterns, you can improve how you feel and act.
Common Cognitive Distortions
- All-or-Nothing Thinking: Seeing things in black and white with no middle ground
- Catastrophizing: Expecting the worst possible outcome
- Mind Reading: Assuming you know what others are thinking
- Overgeneralization: Using words like "always" or "never"
- Emotional Reasoning: "I feel it, so it must be true"
The ABCDE Technique
A - Activating Event
What happened? Describe the situation objectively.
B - Beliefs
What thoughts did you have about the event?
C - Consequences
How did those thoughts make you feel and act?
D - Dispute
Challenge your beliefs. Are they rational? What evidence exists?
E - New Effect
How do you feel after examining your thoughts more rationally?
Practice Makes Progress
